The World Bank has a good introductory book to sustainable development called Beyond Economic Growth. It is in its second edition and though the data is a little bit dated (published in 2004) the chapters are short and accessible with good illustrations. There’s a lot of informative material to help you with the Development, Development Indicators and Consumption sections of the course. Chapters 1-6, 8-9, 12 and 15 are required reading.
Chapters 2 and 3 are required reading.
The report is summarised in the Royal Society’s webpage as follows:
“Rapid and widespread changes in the world’s human population, coupled with unprecedented levels of consumption present profound challenges to human health and wellbeing, and the natural environment. This report gives an overview of how global population and consumption are linked, and the implications for a finite planet.”
